What You’ll Do: Key Responsibilities
- Patrol & Crime Prevention: Conduct proactive patrols, deter criminal activity, and maintain public order.
- Community Engagement: Foster trust through outreach, events, and meaningful dialogue with residents.
- Emergency Response: Respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls with professionalism and calm.
- Investigations & Reporting: Collect evidence, interview witnesses, and produce accurate, detailed reports.
- Law Enforcement: Enforce local, state, and federal laws; issue citations and perform arrests when necessary.
- Public Education: Provide crime prevention tips and safety education to individuals and groups.
- Interagency Collaboration: Work with regional agencies to support joint initiatives and public safety goals.

Compensation & Benefits
- Certified hires: $55,000 and Non-Certified hires $51,287

Position Overview
The Certified Police Officer performs a range of protective service duties, often in high-stress situations. The role includes patrol, law enforcement, emergency response, crime prevention, and community engagement. Officers work under the supervision of a Sergeant and may face personal hazards while protecting life and property.
Essential Functions
- Enforce laws and ordinances
- Investigate criminal activities and traffic incidents
- Respond to calls for service
- Provide courtroom testimony
- Maintain detailed records and reports
- Conduct presentations and safety education
- Build relationships with citizens, businesses, and partner agencies
- Operate patrol vehicles and conduct proactive enforcement
- Execute arrests and serve warrants
- Direct traffic and conduct security checks
- Participate in department and community training programs
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with modern policing methods and procedures
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and de-escalation skills
- Sound decision-making under pressure
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate written reports
- Skilled in firearms use and safe vehicle operation
- Physical agility and endurance
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate’s degree in police or social science preferred, but not required
Special Requirements:
- U.S. citizenship at time of application
- Minimum age of 21
- Valid Virginia driver’s license
- No felony convictions or acts of violence
- Good moral character
- Must pass:
- Background investigation
- Physical examination
- Drug screening
- Psychological evaluation
- Personal history questionnaire
- Must meet all state and departmental training standards
