Job Description:
Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Deputy Chief of Police / Administrative Lieutenant / Law Enforcement Officer II (00128) in the Department of Police and Public Safety. The Deputy Chief of Police / Administrative Lieutenant serves as the department's second-in-command for administrative operations, functioning as a second-level law enforcement supervisor and principal compliance officer for the Longwood University Police Department. The position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Public Safety & Chief of Police and carries broad responsibility across records management, state accreditation, Clery Act compliance, emergency communications, technology infrastructure, and personnel management. When operational needs arise, the Administrative Lieutenant is authorized to assume patrol management responsibilities and command operations in the absence of the Patrol Operations Lieutenant or in support of large events and complex incidents, ensuring seamless, round-the-clock departmental continuity.

The Longwood University Police Department (LUPD) is a fully sworn, accredited law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the campus community through the principles of 21st-century guardian-centered policing. LUPD officers hold full police authority under the Commonwealth of Virginia and operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year across the university's main campus in Farmville, Virginia. Longwood University's mission (developing citizen leaders prepared to make positive contributions to the common good) is at the heart of everything LUPD does. The department's strategic roadmap prioritizes officer wellness, community engagement, compliance excellence, and continuous operational improvement. The Administrative Lieutenant is central to executing that roadmap.
As a 24/7 law enforcement agency, staff may be assigned to work multiple shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, to meet operational needs. This position is considered emergency personnel. Staff must report to work or be called in during inclement weather, emergencies, or staff shortages. Selected candidates are expected to work 12-hour shifts, day or night, based on department needs. Overtime work outside normal shift hours may be required.
This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.
